The Embassy of Greece in Washington D.C. will host a special event to celebrate the cultural and historic linkage between Greece and Afghanistan on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009.  The event will also support Nooristan Foundation, a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides support for charitable and educational projects in rural areas of Afghanistan. Prominent members of the Washington, D.C. diplomatic, government, art and business communities will attend.  

“In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great,” will include a reception, authentic Greek dinner, live Greek and Afghan music, a presentation by archaeologist Dr. Fredrik Hiebert of the National Geographic Society, and remarks by the Greek and Afghan Ambassadors. 

The Honorary Patron for the event is Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Mrs. Dora Bakoiannis and the Honorary Chair H.E.The Ambassador Greece and Mrs. Alexandros P. Mallias.

Ticket proceeds will be used towards projects in Afghanistan such as a village elementary school, a midwife training program, and an initiative to provide humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons at a camp outside of Kabul.  Nooristan Foundation founder Dr. Nadir Atash states, “Providing support for education and economic development in Afghanistan, especially for rural areas, is vital to securing stability.  The Afghan people have suffered tremendously and want to live in peace and work towards a better future.” 

This is a wonderful way to make a contribution to Afghanistan’s future and to attend a meaningful event.
